We have been traveling to Colombia since 2015. We explored Los Llanos for 15 days to find the best experiences.

Are these experiences a good fit for you?

Find out why!

Visiting an hato is an excellent way to observe the wildlife and learn about the exciting culture of Los Llanos. Some of these hatos are 4-6 hours away from Yopal on roads that are in poor condition. Others are small, and you must visit different places with a local agency. The reserve of the Zambrano family is only 1h30 from Yopal and consists of 3 hatos that you can easily visit by horse or jeep. Everything is quickly organized on-site. This is the easiest (and one of the cheapest) llanera experience to organize from Yopal.

  1. Which animals can you observe, and in which season?
  2. Is it possible to enjoy Los Llanos in 3 days?
  3. Do you have to break the bank to plan a Colombian Safari?
  4. Is there an hato near Yopal?
  5. Do you need to speak Spanish?
  6. Where can you plan a multi-day horseback riding trip?
  7. How can you contact them?
  8. Do you want to visit several hatos?

  • Lots of animals

There are a lot of animals on this reserve. In addition to being a famous site for birds, you will eat next to deer, capybaras, and caimans. The other more discreet animals will be seen on your safari trips.

  • Near Yopal

The reserve is only 1h30 from Yopal. The Zambrano family can arrange private transportation for you. It’s ideal if you have little time to enjoy Los Llanos.

  • For everyone

Access to the reserve is easy, and the activities are adapted to all ages. Here, everyone can have fun – children and seniors alike!

  • Affordable

Because of the high transportation costs, organizing a safari in Los Llanos is often expensive. Since the Zambrano’s Reserve is close to Yopal, you can enjoy a stay in Los Llanos at a very affordable price!

  • English

Carlos speaks English, and you can ask for an English translator (at an extra cost). You don’t need to speak Spanish.

  • Comfy rooms

All 3 hatos of the Zambrano family have a different atmosphere ( design, kitchen, surroundings). However, they all have one thing in common: surprisingly comfortable rooms! You’ll sleep well.

  • 4-day horseback riding

The ideal experience to put you in the boots of a llanero. You will explore the reserve on horseback with your private guide to observe as many animals as possible. Each night you will sleep in a new hato, enjoying the advantages of each place (different landscapes and atmosphere). In addition to the many horseback rides, you can go fishing, canoe up rivers, and discover the llanera culture. Not to mention the many well-deserved naps in a hammock under the trees.

  • 2, 3 or 4-day plan

There are other options if you don’t want to spend 4 days on horseback. The Zambrano Family offers 2, 3, or 4-day plans to enjoy all the activities at the same hato. Depending on your plan, you’ll fish, go on several safaris (by jeep, on foot, or on horseback), take a canoe trip, participate in a cooking and craft workshop, and go bird watching.

  • Day trips

Don’t want to spend the night in the nature reserve? You can plan a day trip from Yopal or San Luis de Palenque. It’s up to you if you prefer to observe the animals on foot or on horseback. I’m not a fan of this option since you will miss the two best moments of the day (sunrise & sunset)

I'm not the only one to love the Zambrano's reserve

  • We've been visiting this place every two months since last year because our kids absolutely love it. It's a pure, healthy, and incredible natural experience with no TV or electronics. In the mornings, my son enjoys milking cows, riding horses on the savannah, and walking in the forest with the dogs. In the afternoons, we visit the "Garcero" to see a variety of herons, including the vibrant corocoras. The wildlife is amazing, with deer, chiguiros, babillas (small crocodiles), and wild horses bathing. Words can't describe the beauty of this place. Relax in a refreshing "chinchorro" hammock, bring your favorite book, and indulge in delicious local food while enjoying breathtaking sunsets.
