We have been traveling to Colombia since 2015. We explored 4 times La Guajira to find you the best local agencies and adventures.

Are these experiences a good fit for you?

Find out why!

Many agencies (sometimes illegal ones) offer tours in La Guajira. Unfortunately, the quality of the service is frequently not up to the mark: a jeep in bad condition, an unfriendly driver, or a poorly thought-out itinerary. And sometimes, it is simply the “fault” of the traveler who did not inquire enough about this destination. Indeed, La Guajira is not a trip that will please everyone. Thankfully, Tomplanmytrip and our local friend Paola are here to help you make the right decisions.

  1. Which tourist sites should you visit?
  2. Will you learn about the Wayúu culture?
  3. How many hours will you spend in the jeep?
  4. How are the road conditions right now?
  5. Can you join a group tour?
  6. Do you need a translator?
  7. Should you sleep in a hammock or a bed?
  8. Is the company in order? The insurance?
  9. Does your tour have a positive impact on the area?

  • Culture Wayúu

During your trip to La Guajira, Paola offers additional activities (for a very affordable cost) to discover the Wayuu culture: weaving, dancing, visiting a rancheria. Your trip will be more rewarding on a cultural level.

  • Helpful

These cultural activities are paid directly to the Wayúu families and are greatly appreciated. Your adventure is useful to the local community.

  • Macuira

For me, the park La Macuira is the most impressive part of La Guajira. Few agencies propose it (not enough tourists). With Paola, you increase your chances of visiting this unique Colombia place.

  • Drivers

Paola works with serious drivers who own their jeep ( i.e., taking better care of it). Moreover, they are regularly trained to behave properly with travelers. You will be in good hands.

  • Social

Paola was one of the first agencies to spend time training the different Wayuu rancherias to receive tourists.

Paola manages many groups because her company is the “secret” agency with which the other agencies (resellers) work in BtoB. You can easily join a group tour.

  • Punta Gallinas

It’s a 3-day tour from Riohacha with one night in Cabo de la Vela (with all the stops listed in the previous experience) and one night in Punta Gallinas. You will visit Bahia hondita, Dunas de Taroa, Mirador de Casares, and the lighthouse.

  • Macuira

It’s my favorite trip from Riohacha. You will travel for 4 days to discover the national park of La Macuira (in addition to the other stops mentioned in the previous experiences). Macuira is an oasis hidden in the middle of the desert. You will hike for 4-5 hours through beautiful lush vegetation to reach an impressive sand dune and enjoy stunning views.

  • Day trip

If you have a limited budget or little time, you can still get a taste of Guajira and the Wayúu culture. Start with a trip to Los Flamencos Natural Park to observe the flamingos. Then share the daily life of a Wayúu family in their rancheria before enjoying a sunset on the beach of Mayapo. You can decide to remove 1 or 2 stops.

  • Montes de Oca

Montes de Oca is a forest reserve 2 hours from Riohacha, near Venezuela. The place is known for its lush vegetation and natural crystal pools. After the easy half-hour walk to explore this ecosystem, you will greatly appreciate your dip in the river. You will make a second stop in Maicao for lunch on the way back.

PRICES

Prices change depending on the number of travelers and the experiences.

The first question to ask yourself is this: Do you want a private or a shared tour?

Private tours

Private tours are more expensive, and you’ll follow the same itineraries as the shared tours. The main difference is that you can hire a guide/translator (for an extra price) to get better explanations.

Shared tours

Shared tours are cheaper. Here is what you can expect:

  • There are group tours for 4 trips: Montes de Oca, Cabo de le vela (2 days), Punta Gallinas (3 days), and Macuira (4 days). The most popular tour is the one to Punta Gallinas, so it will be easier to find a date that suits you.
  • Shared tours are for 6 people + driver. You’ll be in a jeep.
  • The driver is not a guide! You will be autonomous during the stops and in the evening in the rancherias. On the other hand, do not hesitate to ask him questions. He will answer you with pleasure.

Here is a rough price list to give you an idea of the budget needed. Paola will confirm the prices once she has spoken with you.

  • Punta Gallinas (3 days) | Group tour with private room| Approx 800,000 COP/pers
  • Macuira (4 days) | Private tour with private room and guide | Approx 1,633,000 COP/pers if 4 people in total
  • Cabo de la Vela (2 days) | Group tour with private room| Approx 420,000 COP/pers
  • Montes de Oca (day trip) | Group tour without guide | Approx 300,000 COP/pers

What’s included

Paola’s agency takes care of the following:

  • The logistics from Riohacha. The jeep stays with you for the duration of your trip.
  • Accommodation (private room or hammock).
  • Meals.
  • Emergency assistance insurance.
  • Entrance fees.

Extra activities

Paola includes on these trips several facultative stops with Wayúu families (depending on the destinations you choose to visit).

These are interesting cultural activities whose money is 100% going to the Wayuu communities. I loved all these stops (dance, visit to a rancheria, talk about turtles, explanation on bag weaving).

It costs, on average, 25-35,000 COP/pers/activity for a group of 4 people.

Reserve your spot in advance

Don’t wait to arrive in Riohacha to choose a tour. You would waste one or two days for nothing. Find out what tours and dates are available now.

⭐ Paola’s reviews ⭐

I'm not the only one to love Paola's agency.

  • We were really happy with the service here! Such kind people and trustworthy! Because of the rainy season it was not possible to go to Punta Gallinas and they were totally honest about it. We had so much fun during the tour and saw amazing places. We definitely will return here to do the full tour! We also recommend this company to everyone. Muchas Gracias a Paola y Arnaldo!

I did the Alta Guajira tour, 3 days - 2 nights. It was amazing, totally worth the hours in the 4 x4. Highly recommend Paola and her team, since before the tour they would always answer all my messages, even outside business hours. The tour itself was very organized. Our driver Mauricio was the best, very punctual, friendly, excellent driver, respectful but also fun! We felt very much taken care of. Thank you Paola and Mauricio!
