Tulum all-inclusive resorts adults only: Mini-reviews

The Tulum area is great for couples who want to come to a private resort for a weekend getaway. The site offers many adult-only options, but most all-inclusive hotels are further away from downtown Tulum.

1# Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya: Best upscale Tulum all-inclusive resort

Adults Only / All Inclusive
Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • Akumal's most luxurious resort
  • Beautiful beach with turtles
Cons:
  • Food could be improved
See on Booking See on Expedia

When it comes to location this may be one of the best resorts in the Akumal beach area. It’s a moderately-sized resort, so you can walk everywhere you need to be. Most of the rooms offer whirlpool tubs which are a lovely romantic feature. The resort runs different types of activities. If you’re looking for anything special, you can always ask the staff to help you out. There are 7 restaurants on-site to choose from.

🏡 Rooms

The swim-up rooms are typically a favorite amongst couples. If you get a room on one of the upper floors, you can trade the swim-up option for a terrace with a view. The master suites are incredibly spacious. You get a living room area with a large TV. Some of the other adults-only resorts in the region are against TVs in the room, so you should consider that.

🛶 Facilities

This resort does a good job when it comes to offering dining and drinking experiences for everyone. Each of the 7 restaurants serves a purpose. You’ve got a pool bar and another one in the beach area. If you want more of the fine dining experience, you can head to the Portofino restaurant. Also, they have a club/entertainment on site.

🏖️ Service & activities

You can get food at all times at this resort. There’s 24-hour room service available. The staff is top-notch. The resort features one of the best concierge services in the area. They can help you book private beachside dinners and things like that. The resort hosts shows every night, and during the day, you can use the tennis courts, take a CrossFit class or go on a tour to another part of the Riviera Maya. Make sure to ask the staff directly to see what they can recommend.

🔎 Remarks

The resort sits right on Akumal Beach, one of the best snorkeling spots near Tulum. If there’s one Achilles’ heel for this resort, it would have to be food.

Even though you can get food at all times here, don’t expect it to be extra tasty. Also, the buffet closes at 3 pm, so be sure to head there early.

2# TRS Yucatan Hotel: Best customer service in Tulum

Adults Only / All Inclusive
TRS Yucatan Hotel
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • 5 star service and beautiful rooms
  • Amazing resort with huge pools
Cons:
  • The beach could be better
See on Booking See on Expedia

This hotel is for people who like to be treated well and have staff constantly checking in to see how you’re doing. The butler service is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this resort. At the same time, it enjoys a unique location, with some of its rooms built on the edge of the lake resort.

You can take a small boat to get around to other parts of the resort. Speaking of getting around the resort, it’s enormous, so you’ll have to commute in a golf cart to specific spots. If you’re looking for a hotel with spacious swimming pools, the TRS Yucatan Hotel also offers that.

🏡 Rooms

The lakeside romance bungalow room can give you some of the resort’s best views. It features large windows that open up to a terrace overlooking the lake. You can enjoy the scenery from the in-room hot tub. Suites with a private pool, marble floors, and a chic modern design are also available. The most extensive suite has a private terrace with a jacuzzi. Regardless of where you stay at this resort, you can count on spacious rooms being the norm.

🛶 Amenities

This is one of the largest resorts in the region. You’ve got 6 different pools to choose from at the resort. Also, there’s a wellness center and a salon area that offers many different treatments and massage options. The food at this resort also draws a lot of people in. The French restaurant La Boheme and the Italian option Tentazione are two of the best for sure. Remember that you can get drinks from the butlers at all times, anywhere at the resort as well.

🏖️ Service & activities

I mentioned that the butler service was one of the resort’s highlights. They can help you book a reservation at any restaurant on the property. Also, they’ll know everything that’s going on at the resort. You contact them through WhatsApp, and you can expect a quick reply every time. And the resort’s app works perfectly to book everything from your mobile. Don’t forget to check out the cabaret club in the evening 😉

🔎 Remarks

The top-notch resort’s service and amenities put it on a short list of the best all-inclusive resorts in the region.

Perhaps the big issue is that the beach could be better, usually filled with sargassum. This is a resort meant to keep people on property. That can be hit or miss depending on what you’re looking for.

3# Kore Tulum: the only resort all-inclusive in Tulum beach

Adults Only / All Inclusive
Kore Tulum Retreat
3.5
$$$$
Pros:
  • Located in the heart of Tulum
  • Ocean view
Cons:
  • No sea access
See on Expedia

Kore Tulum retreat has to be at the top of a list of the best all-inclusive resorts within Tulum. The problem is this resort wins by default. There are no other all-inclusive resorts within the Tulum beach area or downtown. You’re giving up some amenities in favor of a “top” location.

🏡 Rooms

The rooms are spacious, but they all have the same setup. What changes is where on the resort it’s located and whether you have a jacuzzi in the room or not. The most expensive rooms feature a king-size bed with an ocean view. The cheapest ones have two double beds, no jacuzzi, and overlook the garden area.

🛶 Amenities

There are 4 restaurants and a pool bar. There’s also a spa only available to adults at the resort. You can book an appointment at the beauty salon as well. There’s only one pool area at this resort that overlooks the beach. You don’t have direct beach access at this resort.

🏖️ Service & activities

The hotel hosts a foam party occasionally in the pool area. For the most part, though, you have to head to other parts of Tulum for entertainment and activities. That’s not ideal for an all-inclusive option. You’d have to be out and about exploring the region but then head back to eat and drink at the resort because you already paid for that food.

🔎 Remarks

If you want to be in the heart of Tulum and have your meals paid for in advance, this is the spot for that.

Now, understand that the food is not great, and you’ll get cheap brand spirits and wine. There’s not much to do at the resort, but you’re literally in Tulum. So you may not be spending as much time at the resort anyway.

4# Barceló Maya Riviera: Newest adult-only resort in Tulum

Adults Only / All Inclusive
Barceló Maya Riviera
4.0
$$$$
Pros:
  • Great infinity pool
  • Modern comfy rooms
See on Booking See on Expedia

The Barcelo Maya Riviera is a resort that only opened its doors back in 2019. You can expect to find new rooms at the entire facility. The resort tries to offer a wide variety of dining options for guests. They also host their own Broadway-like shows at night. For an all-inclusive adults-only resort, the activities end kind of early, though!

🏡 Rooms

Even the cheapest suite at this hotel is a spacious room with a private balcony. Since it’s a new resort, you can expect everything to be in perfect condition. The highlight of this resort are also the swim-up suites. However, you can get more privacy with the suites on the upper levels. Plus, those tend to have great views of the Caribbean Sea.

🛶 Amenities

This resort has 4 specialty restaurants and a buffet. I enjoyed the Mexican restaurant Agave the most. On the other hand, the food at the buffet can be a bit hit or miss. Be careful with the dress code! Besides Miramar Buffet, you won’t get access to the other restaurants in shorts and sandals. It’s casual or formal wear in most spots.

You can access the other Barcelo hotels in the complex when staying at this resort. That means you can experience the amenities at 6 different hotels for the price of one. The Maya Riviera features perhaps the most gorgeous pool you’ll see anywhere. You have to get up early, though, to get a beach chair in the pool area.

🏖️ Service & activities

There are three theaters and a nightclub that you get access to at the Barcelo Maya Riviera. They are always hosting shows at the theaters. You can ask for drinks anywhere at the resort but must pay extra for room service! Plus, staff can help you book experiences like trips out to nearby cenotes. They offer scuba diving lessons at the resort as well.

🔎 Remarks

Many things are happening at the resort and the other hotels you can access. Don’t hesitate to get a schedule from the staff to plan your day and ensure you don’t miss anything that helps a ton.

The problem that many people report is that the activities end around 11:30 pm. It’s a great resort to keep yourself busy during the day but get an early night’s sleep.

5# UNICO 20°N 87°W: Adult-only resort with the best food

Adults Only / All Inclusive
UNICO 20N 87W
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • Delicious and varied food
  • Beautiful and spacious rooms
Cons:
  • The beach is not good
See on Booking See on Expedia

All-inclusive resorts are usually not known for having the best food on hand for guests. But UNICO may be the exception to the rule. This is a small spot for an all-inclusive resort. This makes it perfect for people who want to come here with their significant other and just relax. There are constant activities in the pool area, but in-house night entertainment isn’t its strong suit.

🏡 Rooms

This is another resort where you can book a rather large room even at the lowest price available. You get a large bed with a small living room area right next to it. This is the only resort with a pillow menu you can pick from to maximize your rest. All of the rooms on the top floors feature private balconies. Also, in-room jacuzzis come standard with these rooms. If you book an ocean view, try to get one on a higher floor.

🛶 Amenities

There are 5 restaurants at this resort. You have a Mexican food option, an Italian restaurant, and an Asian cuisine spot. The other two options are a breakfast café, and the last one is an American-style diner.

The Asian cuisine includes a hibachi option that can rival Benihana or any other restaurant that offers similar food. When it comes to Mexican food, you can expect traditional flavors with a tex-mex mix in there. The coffee shop has some fabulous pastries for a light but delicious breakfast. Even the room service can get you excellent food.

🏖️ Service & activities

As I said, plenty of activities exist, particularly in the pool area. This is another one of those resorts that offer yoga classes. You can get the full list of activities from your concierge, who will be the one to greet you at the resort. Make sure to have your lunches and dinners booked at the beginning of your stay for your entire trip. You can also book a tee time at the nearby golf course and get a ride from the resort to the course and back.

🔎 Remarks

This is an awesome hotel for people who want to go from the pool to the restaurant and back to their rooms. For many people, that’s why people go to all-inclusive resorts.

Since you want to book your meals at the different restaurants in advance, the whole vacation may seem too “scripted” for other folks. Unfortunately, this is one of those hotels that tend to have a sargassum riddled beachfront. And the beach is too narrow for my taste. No romantic walk on the sand here!

6# Catalonia Royal Tulum: Tulum resort with the best scenery

Adults Only / All Inclusive
Catalonia Royal Tulum Beach
4.0
$$$
Pros:
  • Good price & Beautiful beach
  • Small jungle & mangrove forest
Cons:
  • There should be more food options
See on Booking See on Expedia

If you want to stay in the Tulum Jungle area, this is the resort you want to head to. The entire area around the hotel is filled with mangroves and different tropical plants. The beach at this hotel is one of the most beautiful spots in the region.

This is also a resort for those who love participating in hotel activities. They organize beach volleyball, darts tournaments, and everything in between. Since it’s a small resort, you can walk around and participate in everything happening.

🏡 Rooms

These rooms may not wow a lot of people. They have marble floors, and all of them feature private terraces. The furniture in some of the rooms is rustic, making the place feel old for some of us. It’s a good thing that the rooms are fully enclosed because you may be dealing with many mosquitoes outside.

🛶 Amenities

There are 4 bars by the pool area that all serve different types of drinks to guests. Also, there’s one buffet-style restaurant to go along with 7 à la carte spots. Some of these restaurants double down as bars that you can head to at night. Even though there are multiple options, this is not a resort known for its food quality.

The pool area connects right onto Xpu-Ha beach, which is a famous turtle sanctuary. Guests can also enjoy a private beach area.

🏖️ Service & activities

Other than the scenery, it’s for the resort activities people come here. They have a large staff dedicated to organizing karaoke nights at the pool. Games are also going on throughout the day in the pool area. The team also puts on different types of shows at night for guests to enjoy.

🔎 Remarks

You come here for the scenery and the fitness classes. You can count on two things at this resort, having something to do and a drink in your hand if you’re by the pool area.

The rooms don’t have too many amenities that will blow your mind. Also, this is probably not the adults-only all-inclusive hotel for couples who want to be alone.

Best Adult Only hotels in Tulum (not all-inclusive & smaller)

As you can see by now, finding Tulum’s all-inclusive adults-only resorts is like finding a needle in a haystack. 99% of them aren’t in Tulum. Fortunately, you can stay at beautiful boutique resort hotels with trained staff, luxury amenities, and still no kids allowed!

1# Mi Amor: The best adult-only venues to celebrate your love

For Couples / Adults Only
Mi Amor a Colibri Boutique
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • Rooms with outdoor Jacuzzis
  • Excellent privacy and SPA
Cons:
  • No sandy beach
See on Booking See on Expedia

Mi Amor is an excellent hotel for couples who want to get away and relax for a couple of days by the beach. It’s a small resort, meaning the pool area and bar are never too crowded. If you get a suite with a private jacuzzi or plunge pool, you won’t even need it. The staff can even bring your breakfast right to your door every day.

🏡 Rooms

Most of the rooms feature hardwood floors and large windows. This is intentional so that you can enjoy the views from the room. As I mentioned, most of them come with a private plunge pool. I recommend the rooms with an ocean view. Anything next to the garden or jungle area may come with more mosquitoes.

🛶 Amenities

There’s a small pool and poolside bar at the resort. Also, you can book an appointment at the full-service spa within the hotel. That’s not the case for some of the other activities. You may have to head two doors down to the Mezzanine hotel for beach access. Food at Mi Amor is known for being one of the best in Tulum—a world-famous chef.

🏖️ Service & activities

The highlight of this Tulum resort are the romantic dinners. Ask the staff to help you set that up. They also offer different mystic experiences with Mayan rituals. You can book other activities like cooking classes at nearby hotels directly with the staff at Mi Amor.

Speaking of the staff, they are always on hand to provide drinks to guests. They also ensure breakfast is left at your doorstep if you order it to the room. Overall they are known for being super attentive.

🔎 Remarks

Get a room that really allows you to enjoy the views that this hotel has to offer! It’s a quiet romantic option in the heart of Tulum.

There are a lot of different activities that you can book from this hotel. The problem is that each activity comes at an extra cost, and many take place at other Tulum hotels.

2# The beach Tulum: Adult-only hotel with the best beachfront rooms

Adults Only
The beach Tulum
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • Excepcional customer service
  • A few steps from bars and restaurants
Cons:
  • Crowded around the hotel in the peak season
See on Booking See on Expedia

The Beach Tulum is your spot if you want to head to a romantic beach shack with all the high-end amenities. The entire facility is covered in sand, so you always feel at the beach. Apart from the fantastic views, you can enjoy drinks at all times at this resort. And as a guest at the hotel, you have a reserved spot on the private beach.

🏡 Rooms

All of the rooms have something unique to offer. The Junior suite that’s essentially beachside is the best room in the house in my book. You get a private pool and a jacuzzi inside the room with a king-size bed. The rooftop rooms are also cool. They feature a hot tub on the large private terrace with amazing views.

🛶 Amenities

You have two communal pools and two restaurants at the resort to enjoy. They usually offer free à la carte breakfast options from these two restaurants. There’s a large dance studio where the yoga lessons take place. Also, the hotel has a small fitness center and a spa.

🏖️ Service & activities

Service is completely run via WhatsApp. You’ll probably like the fact that you can text the staff, and they’ll get you a drink on the beach or even up to your room. I mentioned that there’s a reserved spot on the private beach for each person staying at the resort that day. You can book wine tastings, diving tours, and all sorts of activities for an added cost.

🔎 Remarks

This resort offers a Tulum all-inclusive type of service, with a level of privacy you don’t get at all-inclusive resorts. Sure, you’ll pay a bit more for this experience, but I would say it’s worth it.

What may not be worth it are the overly expensive spa treatments. Choose what you want to splurge on wisely, I guess.

3# Radhoo Tulum: Adult-only hotel with the best pool

Bohemian / Adults Only
Radhoo Tulum
4.5
$$$$$
Pros:
  • Beautiful beach, pool & decoration
  • Tons of activities and guide tours
Cons:
  • Mosquitoes
See on Booking See on Expedia

Radhoo was one large beach house once upon a time. Today it’s a place that gets you into its vibe and mystique from the moment you arrive. There’s a distinct incense smell that looms over the entire resort. The pool area surrounded by the local jungle is undoubtedly the main attraction at this resort. You may also love the over-the-top service here.

🏡 Rooms

The rooms make you feel as if you were in a large beach cabin. That means they’re dark (especially the standard rooms), which can be good or bad. All of them feature hardwood floors. The best room is the Junior Suite Deluxe. It’s on the top floor with a private terrace and a dangling hammock. The rest are spacious rooms with comfy beds but don’t feature much else.

🛶 Amenities

The pool is as Instagrammable as it gets in Tulum. There’s a poolside lounge area where you can enjoy all sorts of drinks and food. The resort also has its own spa facilities. The access to the beach is on the other side of the street at the Encantada hotel. Make sure to book your spot at the beachside restaurants in advance

🏖️ Service & activities

Yoga classes and fine dining at the NU restaurant are the common things you can do at this resort. You can book tours to cenotes and other spots in the Riviera Maya. These tours come at an extra cost, but the hotel covers private transportation. Just like at The Beach, the staff is reachable via WhatsApp, and they can always get you what you need.

🔎 Remarks

This hotel offers packages with scheduled daily activities within the resort and other parts of the Riviera Maya. That’s an excellent option for people who want to come out here to relax and enjoy themselves.

Since it’s not one of the all-inclusive Tulum resorts, you can rack up a hefty bill ordering drinks as if they were free.

Booking guide: How to pick your adult-only accommodation in Tulum

When booking your accommodation in Tulum, choosing between staying at an all-inclusive resort or a boutique hotel is not the only thing you’ll have to decide.

How to Get from Cancun Airport to Tulum?

The Cancun international airport is located about 80 miles from Tulum. Usually, it takes about an hour and a half to two hours to make the journey. There are 4 main options to get to Tulum from the Cancun airport.

The easiest way to get from the Cancun airport to Tulum is to book the trip with a private transportation company in advance. You can get decent rates (319 dollars for 7 travelers for a round trip), particularly if traveling with a larger group. You could also pick up a cab at the airport, which will cost you about 150 dollars. Cab drivers in Cancun are not known for giving tourists good deals.

The cheapest way is to take an ADO bus. There are 4 departure times from the Cancun airport to Tulum. A one-way ticket costs around 14 dollars. You can catch a bus from any of the terminals at the airport. They take you to either the ADO stop near the Tulum ruins or downtown Tulum.

Another thing that you can do is rent a car and drive down to Tulum yourself. Car rental rates go from as cheap as 11 dollars a day to 40 dollars a day in the peak season. Most of the time, you have to pay an extra 10 or 11 dollars a day for insurance. Some car rental companies already include insurance within their rates. Make sure you figure out whether or not insurance is included in your rate before you book a rental car. It’s the best way to explore the region.

How to move around Tulum

A lot of resorts will allow you to either rent out bikes and scooters to move around Tulum or even allow you to use them for free. Tulum’s streets, though, are rocky and challenging to ride on. Plus, the area is rather large, so you won’t be able to walk from the Tulum town area to the beach.

No ride-share apps have been allowed to enter Tulum. Cabs are expensive and offer subpar services in most cases. The worst part is most of the best all-inclusive resorts are isolated from the Tulum town area. If you want to explore everything Tulum offers, you’re better off renting a car.

Where to stay

Where you decide to stay within the area can heavily dictate the activities you’ll get to do.

In the resorts between Tulum & Puerto Aventuras

Many of Tulum’s all-inclusive resorts are actually in this area. It’s kind of isolated—you’re usually about 30 minutes away from downtown Tulum. That isolation forces you to stay at the resort or pay a ton of money for cabs or private transportation to the main tourist attractions near Tulum, Mexico.

Tulum Beach

This is where you’ll find most boutique hotels. It’s quieter than many expect, especially if you stay in the south of the Tulum hotel zone, away from the bars. You’ll find the most luxurious restaurants and clubs, and many travelers consider it the place to be to feel Tulum’s life.

Tulum Downtown

Head downtown if you’re looking for a cheaper beach vacation with a Mexican vibe. It’s filled with bars and taco shops on every corner. You could argue teens and early 20-year-olds enjoy this vibe more. Not necessarily what you want to experience.

Almost all the all-inclusive Tulum resorts aren’t in Tulum

Just because the resort is called something like “Dreams Tulum” doesn’t mean the property is actually in Tulum. The only all-inclusive resort within the city is Kore Tulum retreat. All of the best all-inclusive resorts in the region are about 30 min from the main town area.

All-inclusive or not?

The significant benefit of staying at an all-inclusive resort is that you don’t have to worry about anything throughout your stay. Food, drinks, and even entertainment are taken care of for you. The problem with all-inclusive resorts is that you may feel pressured to stay on property as much as possible to get your money’s worth. That can lead to missing out on exploring other parts of Tulum. So, do you want to have an active vacation or just drink margaritas on the beach?

What are you looking for?

→ If you want to relax and not worry about a thing, an adults-only all-inclusive resort will be your top option. Secret Akumal is one of those spots with a stunning beach that can fit the bill. For people looking for a more intimate experience, boutique hotels like Mi Amor or Radhoo work just fine.

For people looking to have fun within an all-inclusive resort, the Catalonia Royal Tulum is one of the best spots. There are a ton of things to do within the hotel itself. Now, if you want to explore the Tulum bar scene, I recommend Beach Tulum

→ Regarding the best beaches, most of the boutique hotels in Tulum beach have impressive views of the Caribbean Sea. If you want to pick from the all-inclusive resorts, Catalonia Royal and Secrets won’t disappoint you.

→ If you wish to plan day trips to the Tulum ruins or other parts of the Riviera Maya, pick a boutique hotel. Radhoo allows you to plan out your whole trip with different trips around the region. They even provide private transportation.

What’s really included?

Not all all-inclusive resorts are fully honest about what’s included in the deal they’re offering. Some resorts have been known to provide, for example, an open bar, but only with lower-tier drinks included. You’ll have to pay an extra fee if you want a specific brand. The same applies to things like fitness classes and other activities at the resort. Be sure to ask the resort directly or do some extra digging before you book.

Food and drinks

Again at all-inclusive resorts, alcoholic drinks may be served with very little booze in them. Food at many Tulum resorts can be hit or miss. UNICO, Mi Amor & Beach Tulum are some of the exceptions. You can find great food at these hotels. Even if you plan to eat at a restaurant at the resort, get in the habit of making a reservation. Certain spots fill up every night!

Price/Quality

All-inclusive resorts are usually places where you can get a good bang for your buck. That’s not always the case, particularly when you find yourself at one of these resorts that serves cheap drinks and subpar food. You have to choose wisely.

When it comes to the boutique Tulum resorts, focus on more than just the picture. Some look great but sell more of a “status” than an actual experience.

Seaweed

The foul-smelling seaweed known as sargassum has completely invaded Tulum beaches. High seaweed season runs from March to October. Many Tulum beaches are overrun by seaweed at certain times during the year. You can check for updates on Sargassum levels online before you book.

Most resorts have staff members assigned to clean the beaches daily. However, more and more seaweed ends up on these beaches every year. It is hard for these crews to keep the beaches 100% clean.

Timeshare sellers

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, there’s a good chance you’ll run into timeshare sellers. They’ll typically invite you to a breakfast where the whole goal is to sell you some membership to a rewards program. That’s more common these days than the traditional timeshare model.

Some sellers are very pushy, and it can get uncomfortable. Maybe the breakfast isn’t so bad for people who like their experience and may want to return to the same all-inclusive.

Big or small all-inclusive resorts?

Big all-inclusive Tulum resorts like the Barcelo or TRS typically offer more entertainment options. You’ll always be able to keep yourself busy at these resorts. Also, they tend to provide more restaurants that you can choose from. The downside is that you’ll be traveling by golf cart from one part to the other.

Smaller all-inclusive resorts in Tulum, like UNICO or Kore, allow you to walk to any part of the resort. They are usually more private. For people who really want the Tulum romantic experience, a boutique hotel is better than any Tulum all-inclusive resort.

Mosquitoes

Bring insect repellent if you choose to stay on the Tulum jungle side. Mosquitoes are no joke in this part of the Riviera Maya. It worsens in the rainy season, typically from June to October. Even if you come to Tulum at another time, bring insect repellent for excursions and things like that.
