A protected area teeming with life as your playground

Set off on a 4-day horseback safari to appreciate the vast landscapes and the richness of the wildlife.

Explore this 9,000-hectare nature reserve like a true Llanero. Ride across the vast plains of the Llanos, from hato to hato, searching for the many animal species that inhabit it. A true cradle of life, seize the opportunity to admire wildlife in its natural habitat. Look out for capybaras, caimans, eagles, ibises, herons, turtles, giant anteaters, deer, and more.

Roadmap

4 Days

  • Day 1 Yopal > Hato Mata De Palma
  • Day 2 Hato Mata De Palma > Hato Montana
  • Day 3 Hato Montana > Hato Altamira
  • Day 4 Hato Altamira > Hato Mata De Palma > Yopal

What to expect

Depart from Yopal and go towards the first hato of your adventure. Upon arrival, observe the first animals, likely capybaras. After this fascinating spectacle, a walk awaits to spot birds, caimans, and other species that may reveal themselves.
After lunch, get acquainted with your horse and embark on a first expedition to observe the flora and fauna around the farm.
As the sun sets, enjoy a magnificent sunset before returning to your accommodation for the first night.
Try piranha fishing before breakfast, then head to your second accommodation.

Discover your new environment after a 2.5-hour ride, with short breaks in the shade and observing various animal species. Hato Montana is like a small boutique hotel.

Explore the farm's surroundings, discover its wildlife, and enjoy the day's activities to learn more about the life of the llaneros. In the evening, enjoy the stories told by your guide and hosts, along with a small "concert" of traditional songs.
Start this third day by galloping with the llaneros to gather the semi-wild horses and care for their manes and tails. Then, head to Hato Altamira, a more rustic and authentic spot marking the final stage of your adventure.

Once there, enjoy a peaceful walk, admire the many birds in the fruit trees, and head to a natural "hotel" for ibises and herons. Watch this amazing spectacle as the sun sets.
After another early wake-up, test your agility by milking the cows. Around 9 AM, saddle up one last time to enjoy the wildlife in this beautiful reserve before heading to Hato Mata De Palma, marking the end of your journey.

Then, take transport back to Yopal.

  • Prices depend on selected options, the number of people, and exchange rate fluctuations.
Choose your package:
  • The prices on the page correspond to a private 4-day/3-night stay without a translator. For the price of 3-4 people, everyone stays in the same room.

Why choose this option:
  • It’s a great horseback adventure, even if you're an amateur rider. The distances are short, and the terrain is flat and not very rugged. Just be prepared for a bit of soreness.
  • The amount of wildlife to observe in their natural habitat is impressive.
  • The reserve is easily accessible from Yopal. Located just 1.5 hours away by jeep, you can visit any time of the year.
  • Pleasant accommodations with comfortable beds and spacious showers. The food is excellent.
  • Discover a new hato each day, each with its unique ambiance, wildlife, and surrounding landscapes.
  • The offer is very competitive for a private safari, and the service is high quality.
What may disappoint:
  • Not enough interaction with locals to fully immerse yourself in the Llanero culture.
  • During high season, many travelers organize day trips from Yopal. The tranquility disappears when there are too many people.
  • Although extraordinary, the adventure can feel repetitive. The landscapes and animals observed remain quite similar over the 4 days.
  • Boots and binoculars are not provided for the entire duration of the safari.
