How to rent a private boat in Cartagena
I’m going to help you find the boat of your dreams for the perfect day in the Rosario Islands. And it all starts with knowing the 5 biggest mistakes travelers make when renting a boat in Cartagena—handpicked by our boat rental expert in Cartagena
5 mistakes to avoid when renting a boat
If you’re aware of these mistakes, you’ll avoid 95% of the problems.
MISTAKE 1: People don’t look enough online first
There are probably one hundred boat agencies in Cartagena. Between street vendors, hotel flyers, and the famous “my cousin knows a guy,” you won’t have trouble finding a private boat. But finding a good boat at a good price—that’s a different story.
This is where doing your online research really pays off (like reading Tomplanmytrip 😉). Pretty quickly, you’ll realize that most of these agencies are just middlemen for other middlemen, which drives up the prices.
Another crucial point: the quality of the captains and the condition of the boats. And that’s something you won’t know until the last minute when it’s too late to switch. Trust me, if the captain’s not nice, good luck enjoying your day without considering a mutiny.
That’s why we took the lead in finding the right boat expert. Let me introduce Aymeric.
Based in Cartagena, he started by buying his own boat, which helped him connect with the best boat owners and captains. Today, he runs his own agency with a selection of trusted boats and captains. Since he deals directly with the owners, his prices are unbeatable.
TOM’S TIP
At Tomplanmytrip, our mission is to help our readers connect for free with our favorite local agencies. A fantastic trip guaranteed 🙂 Learn more about Aymeric and how to contact him here.
Mistake 2: People don’t have a plan for the day
Okay, so you’re finally on your beautiful boat with a friendly crew that won’t toss you to the sharks once you hit those turquoise waters. Now what?
If you haven’t done any research on where you want to go, let me tell you—the captains will decide for you. And surprise: some love taking you to spots where their buddies run expensive joints with commissions involved. If you hear “Playa Azul,” start prepping for mutiny.
So, how do you avoid these traps? A little planning goes a long way!
And the best tip: ask our expert directly. Whether you’re looking to party or just chill at a quiet beach club, he’ll give you the best recommendations and make sure the captain sticks to the plan. No nasty surprises.
And if you want to change your mind once you’re at sea? No problem, you’re the boss. You call the shots on the final itinerary.
ADRIEN’S TIP
With our approach, you can chat with an expert first and only book if you’re satisfied with his offer. Learn more about Aymeric and how to contact him here.
MISTAKE 3: communication issues
Communication in Colombia, especially on the Caribbean coast, is a whole adventure.
Forget about emails—here, it’s WhatsApp or nothing. But even then, things can get tricky. Some agencies only speak Spanish, and others only speak Costeño (the local dialect of the coast). It’s a type of Spanish where half the words disappear. Personally, it took me about five years to even start understanding what they were saying.
Luckily, our expert speaks French, English, and Spanish. So, no worries there. Plus, he’s even reachable when you’re out on the islands (thank you, not-so-bad cell service!). Feel free also to use Google Translate with the captains.
TOM’S TIP
Our service is 100% free, and with our experience in Colombian tourism, we ensure the price is fair for our readers. Everything is transparent, and you’ll pay the local rate. Here’s how to reach this expert.
MISTAKE 4: People don’t combine a boat trip with a stay on the Rosario island
Here’s an incredible yet little-known tip to really make the most of your stay in Cartagena!
To get to your hotel on the Rosario Islands, you usually have to take the hotel’s boat (if they have one). The issue? It usually leaves around 8:30 a.m. and is almost never included in the room price.
But if you want to add a touch of jet-set flair to your adventure, here’s the plan:
Rent a private boat for the day. You’ll be able to explore the Rosario Islands at your own pace and then ask the captain to drop you off directly at your hotel around 3 p.m.
This way, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the paradise islands and your accommodation without worrying about the return boat. And the next day, you can head back leisurely on the hotel’s boat around 3 p.m.
It’s our boat expert‘s favorite combo.
MISTAKE 5: People are scammed in Isla Cholon
Ah, Cholon… the idea of dancing on a yacht, surrounded by turquoise water, sipping cocktails with bronzed bodies to the sound of reggaeton—it’s a dream for many (though let’s be honest, the reality can be a bit different).
Everyone’s drinking, no one’s really paying attention too much, and by the end of the day, you often end up with a hefty bill (cash only, of course), as if you’d partied in Ibiza. The result? You head back to Cartagena, feeling a little frustrated.
To avoid that, here are my tips:
- Always ask for the prices upfront, ask again, and pay directly.
- If the price seems outrageous, don’t let them take advantage. Our expert provides a cooler with ice, so bring your own drinks.
- To avoid lunch surprises, opt for a beach club on Isla Grande. The prices are fixed, no scams, and you can even pay by card if needed. Plus, our expert knows the best spots there. 😉

Cartagena boat rental: What to know
Now, let’s dive a little deeper into some important points you should know.
Which Islands Can You Visit With Your Private Boat?
Even if hiring a private boat for the entire day gives you more freedom, it’s best to know the places you want to visit in advance. You should leave Cartagena at 9am.
Islas Del Rosario (ISLA GRANDE AND AROUND)
You’ll always start by the Rosario Islands—the most paradise-like spot, with turquoise waters, palm trees, and white beach sand. It’s more or less 1h away from Cartagena.
Delight in snorkeling through crystal-clear waters, exploring colorful coral reefs, and swimming in “La Piscina.” A sunken airplane is waiting 6 meters below the surface for the more adventurous.
Think about stopping at one of the numerous nearby beach restaurants for a snack and relish their private white-sand beach. You can also tour around to view luxurious private homes.
- The best beaches are at Islabela Hotel, Pau’e Club, and Rosario Tequendema Hotel.
- I recommend eating at Islabela or Pa’ue Beach Lounge.
- Go to Bora Bora if you’re looking for a party vibe—too expensive for my taste.
Isla Chólon
This place is renowned for its lively party scene, especially on weekends. Boats anchor together, and people dance to loud reggaeton music.
However, beware of assertive vendors who may attempt to sell you drinks and food at steep prices. Our expert can introduce you to a reliable local in Cholon.
If you prefer a more tranquil lunch, consider stopping at “Restaurante Aura”, which offers a fixed-price menu.
Even if you don’t want to party, you can still pass by for a quick look—it’s on the way to Isla Baru.
Isla Baru
Isla Baru (Baru Island) is mostly known for Playa Blanca, a beautiful yet overcrowded beach. The large number of people and jet skis will make your swimming challenging. For eating, consider Ocean Blue and Banana Beach Club, both of which offer excellent seafood and picturesque views.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of stopping off at Playa Blanca when I charter a private boat. You can ask the captains to find a more discreet spot, like Playa Tranquila or Playa Puntilla in front of the Hotel Decameron.
Our expert doesn’t recommend it either.
Tierra Bomba Island
Usually, people don’t include Tierra Bomba in their itinerary because it lacks white sand beaches and turquoise waters.
The island is located 15 minutes away from Cartagena and has popular beach clubs like Blue Apple, Amare and Marlin, known for excellent food and drinks.
San Bernardo Islands
While beautiful, the San Bernardo islands are two hours away, making them less feasible for a one-day trip. And there are fewer nice options to stop for a lunch break.
ADRIEN’S TIP
The most common route is Isla Grande, Isla Cholon, and Isla Barú. Discuss it with our expert to get his opinion.
Weather in Cartagena and Boat renting
In Cartagena, known for its near year-round sun, boat trips are seldom disrupted by the weather.
The dry season, from December to April, offers sunny weather with temperatures ranging from 70’s°F to 90’s°F (22 – 32 deg. °C). However, during this period, the return trip from the islands can experience big waves.
The rainiest months are September and October, yet, even in these months, the weather generally features brief, heavy showers. Rain rarely spoils the spirit of a boat trip, as it is usually short-lived and part of the adventure.
It’s important to note that boat trips are sometimes canceled due to bad weather conditions—2-4 cancellations per year. It’s a decision made by the port authority.
I prefer to charter a boat in June, July, August, or November because the prices are more attractive, the weather is often sunny, and the sea is calm.
Cartagena’s High season
Cartagena’s high season includes the Miss Colombia pageant in November, the holidays from December 15th to January 15th, and Easter.
During these times, it’s crucial to book your boat, beach clubs, and beach restaurants well in advance due to increased demand. You’ll find more people around the islands, and prices for rentals and services can double. Expect prices to rise by at least 25% at this time of year.
Boat rental prices in Cartagena
There are no fixed prices between boat owners. It will vary according to season, availability, group size, and number of intermediaries. Some unscrupulous agencies do not hesitate to increase their prices if they meet a foreigner.
For a better price, try to go through an agency that is in direct contact with the boat owners. Also check whether the rental includes port tax.
While budget is a key consideration for most of us when planning a trip, opting for the cheapest agency and boat rental in Cartagena may not be the best choice.
The sea can be rough at certain times of the year, and an inexperienced or unlicensed captain, often provided by cheaper agencies, may pose safety issues. Additionally, these agencies might offer boats in poor condition to cut costs.
Our expert offers excellent prices and includes the port tax.
Boat schedule and itineraries
Boat rentals in Cartagena run from 9 AM to 5 PM, so it’s important to arrive on time in the morning to maximize your day at sea. For safety reasons, boats generally head back to Cartagena between 3-4 PM, as wind and tides get stronger in the afternoon.
While renting a private boat offers flexibility in your itinerary, keep in mind that once you move from one location to another, like from the Rosario Islands to Barú for lunch, you can’t go back to a previous spot. It’s best to plan a straightforward itinerary to ensure a smooth and enjoyable day—ask our expert to help you out!
The ports and docks of Cartagena
In Cartagena, the main docks for boat departures are Pegasus Dock, Todomar Marina, and Cartagena Nautical Club. All are near or a short taxi ride from the walled city. It’s important to double-check with the boat charter company so that you don’t show up at the wrong place.
- Pegasus Dock is just 100 meters from the walled city, not far from the Torre del Reloj, making it easily accessible for those staying in Centro. You’ll probably leave from there.
- Todomar Marina is at the Bocagrande entrance, a 5-10 minute taxi ride from Centro.
- Cartagena Nautical Club, in the Manga neighborhood, is about 10 minutes by taxi from the walled city and mainly serves larger boats like yachts and catamarans.
Drinks
On board, you’ll have a cooler and ice for classic boats and fridges for yachts, sailboats and catamarans.
I recommend bringing your own water and asking the boat charter company to purchase any other drinks you want, whether it’s alcohol or non-alcoholic beverages. This way, you’re well-prepared for your trip.
Lunch
During your boat trip, you have a wide range of lunch options to choose from.
For a local cuisine, try the rustic and tasty dishes available on most islands, such as fried fish with coconut rice and patacón. IslaBela and Pa’ue are great places to eat these specialties right on the beach.
If you’re looking for a wider variety of food, Mediterranean cuisine is served at restaurants like Fenix, Amare, or Blue Apple on Tierra Bomba, or Aura near Cholon.
Do keep in mind that meal preparation might take about an hour. I recommend you reserve your restaurant in advance with your expert.
Alternatively, if you’re looking to save some money, consider packing your own lunch. Our partner can also arrange a catered picnic if needed.
You’ll Rent Your Private Boat With A captain/Skipper
When renting a boat in Cartagena, a local captain and his assistant will be provided to handle navigation since you won’t be allowed to drive, even if you hold a foreign boat license.
Local captains know a lot about the nearby islands, but I still recommend you create your own itinerary with your expert ahead of time. Keep in mind that 99% of the captains don’t speak English, let alone French.
Lastly, it’s customary to cover the captains’ meals, which typically cost around 15 USD per meal.
Price scams
Beware of locals who may be targeting tourists to extract as much money as possible.
To avoid being scammed or overcharged, always clarify prices before purchasing and confirm that they are quoted in Colombian Pesos (COP), not dollars. Be particularly vigilant in places like Playa Azul, Isla Cholon, and Playa Blanca, which are known for price gouging.
And don’t listen to anyone offering ‘free’ samples, as these are often not free at all.
The key to avoiding unexpected costs is awareness and asking the right questions upfront.
What To Bring?
When packing for a boat trip in Cartagena, there are several essentials to consider:
- Sun protection is paramount due to the intense sun and its reflection off the water, so don’t forget to pack a strong SPF 50 sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Your hydration is key, so be sure to include plenty of water in your packing list.
- Bring a towel and beach-appropriate clothing.
- Your favorite music playlist for the boat’s Bluetooth speakers to enhance your experience on the water.
- It’s also advisable to carry cash for island purchases and for tipping your crew.
