Choosing the best hotels in Cartagena can be tricky. The choices are numerous, some are costly and not really worth it, and others are near a noisy nightclub (soundproofing in an old colonial building isn’t great).
After more than 15 trips to Cartagena (Aleja loves this city), I’ve learned a few tricks to find the right accommodation. Here’s my analysis, with the pros and cons of my favorite hotels.

Best Hotels in Cartagena : My Ideal Choice List
When I’m planning a romantic trip with my wife, I pick a hotel in the historic center, which has a lovely romantic atmosphere. This area boasts the most luxurious and top hotels in Cartagena, such as Casa San Agustín or Casa La Cartujita (excellent value for money).
For a laid-back atmosphere (and budget-friendly lodging), I go for a hotel in Getsemani like Casa Isabel or Casa Jaguar.
And if I want to wake up facing the sea, I choose a more modern hotel like the Hyatt Regency in the Bocagrande neighborhood, or I head to the Rosario Islands for some seclusion, like the Sofitel Calablanca on Isla Baru or Coralina Island on Isla Grande.

Prior to your trip to Cartagena de Indias, I suggest discovering the must-see sights in the city and reading our detailed neighborhood review. We also provide connections to the city’s top experts to enjoy the best Cartagena tours.

How to choose your hotel in Cartagena
Keep these tips in mind when booking your holiday in Cartagena de Indias.
Where to stay in Cartagena de Indias
→ Walled City: This is the historic center of Cartagena de Indias, known for its colonial architecture and vibrant atmosphere. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, filled with colorful houses, churches, plazas, and museums. It’s a great place to stay if you enjoy history, culture, and nightlife. However, it can be quite busy and noisy, especially during the high season. The accommodations here range from budget hostels to luxury hotels.
My favorite hotels in this area are Casa San Agustin, Amarla Boutique, Casa del Arzobispado, Sofitel Santa Clara, Hotel Quadrifolio, and Casa Pestagua.
→ Getsemani: This trendy neighborhood is located just outside the Walled City. It’s known for its street art, local vibe, and nightlife. It’s less touristy than the Walled City, offering a more authentic experience. The accommodations here are generally cheaper than in the Walled City, with a mix of budget hostels and mid-range hotels.
My favorite hotels in this area are Casa Jaguar, Casa Isabel & Hotel Capellan.
→ Bocagrande & Laguito: These are modern neighborhoods located along the beach. They’re known for their high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and restaurants. They offer a contrast to the historic Walled City, with a more Miami-like vibe. The beaches here are not the best in Cartagena de Indias, but they’re still famous for sunbathing and water sports. The accommodations here are mostly mid-range and Cartagena Colombia 5-star hotels.
My favorite hotel in this area is the Hyatt Regency.
→ Rosario Islands: These are a group of islands located about an hour away from Cartagena by boat. They’re known for their beautiful beaches, clear waters, and coral reefs. They’re a great place to stay if you enjoy nature and water activities, such as snorkeling and diving. The accommodations here range from budget eco-lodges to luxury resorts. However, keep in mind that the islands can be quite isolated, with limited services and amenities.
My favorite hotels in this area are Las Islas and Sofitel Baru Calablanca.
Service & Accommodations
→ Many hotels in Cartagena de Indias are former colonial buildings, and their restorations are expensive. This means there is little hot water, soundproofing is sometimes non-existent, and some finishing touches are missing. Las Islas is a quiet option.
→ Consider the hotel Casa San Agustin, Sofitel Santa Clara, or the Hyatt Regency if you require an elevator.
→ If you come to Cartagena de Indias to expect a European standard of service, you may be disappointed. Caribbean coastal culture is more relaxed when it comes to organization. Try to roll with it and choose Casa San Agustin and Sofitel Santa Clara for superior service.
→ Avoid choosing the least expensive rooms. These rates are to attract visitors to the booking sites. Be aware that cheaper ground floor rooms often get little natural light or are located near noisy areas, such as the kitchen or the reception.
Attractions & surrounding areas
→ If you’re looking to party, Centro and Getsemaní offer a variety of nightclubs.
→ Bocagrande is a good option for those who want to enjoy more economical and modern beachfront hotels in Cartagena with access to restaurants and entertainment. The historic center is only minutes away by taxi, so it’s easy to get in a day to explore the old colonial city.
→ Staying in Old Town is a safe alternative to experiencing the area’s heritage. In this area, hotels in Cartagena de Indias are typically renovated romantic colonial houses offering a level of luxury not found in other parts of the city.
→ The beaches bordering Cartagena are not attractive. If you want to wake up in a beautiful setting next to crystal clear waters, consider booking your hotel in the Rosario Islands. Check out Las Islas or Sofitel Calablanca.
Weather and tourist season
Cartagena stays in the 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit range year-round. December through February is the sunniest and most crowded season. June and July are also popular. If you don’t mind the rain, September through November is your best bet to avoid crowds.
How to get to Cartagena de Indias
Many buses and planes are arriving every day in Cartagena. If you come by car, some hotels have small parking lots.
Note: It is never easy to park.
The airport is close to Getsemaní and the walled city (15 – 20 minutes by cab). Many hotels organize transfers, but it will be cheaper if you take an official cab from the airport.
The bus terminal is on the outskirts of Cartagena. You will need 45 to 60 minutes to get to your hotel in Getsemaní or the Historic Center.
If you are already on the Caribbean coast, the most comfortable solution is to take a door-to-door transportation service or private transportation. You can arrive from: Minca, Tayrona, Santa Marta, Rincon del Mar, Palomino.
How long to stay in Cartagena
2 nights are enough to get to know Cartagena de Indias. Take an early morning stroll through the colorful streets of Getsemaní and the historic center. Then, look for a cultural activity such as the Bazurto market or the fishermen of La Boquilla. At the end of the day, don’t miss the sunset from the city walls.

❌ Why you might not like this hotel
- The pool, while inviting, is a touch smaller than you’d imagine and not always perfectly heated or crystal clear.
- When booking, consider requesting a room away from the pool and kitchen courtyard—it’s the noisiest and darkest one.

3# Best boutique hotel in Cartagena: Casa Pestagua

5# Hotel with the best rooms: Amarla Boutique
- Only 7 rooms, perfectly decorated
- The rooftop/pool view is spectacular
- Don't pick the classic room
My opinion: I love the intimacy and the refined colonial atmosphere of the Amarla boutique hotel. Moreover, it is beautifully located in the historic heart of the city.
Amarla Boutique Hotel is a lavish, hidden gem tucked in Cartagena’s bustling Walled City. With its colonial allure, intimate setting, and personalized service, this boutique hotel offers a unique blend of luxury and history, punctuated by a made-to-order breakfast and charming vintage decor. It’s one of my favorite boutique hotels in Cartagena de Indias.

- Vintage charm: The hotel’s unique vintage furnishings and decor transport guests to a bygone era, creating a memorable ambiance.
- Fantastic amenities: An inclusive made-to-order breakfast and a rooftop pool with spectacular views add value and enjoyment to your stay.
- Prime location: Its heart-of-the-city location puts you within walking distance of Cartagena’s iconic sites.
- Excellent experiences available in the hotel
❌ Why you might not like this hotel
- Rooms can feel cramped for more extended stays, and antique showers may exhibit hot water inconsistencies. Consider a deluxe room for added space and comfort.
- While vintage furniture adds aesthetic appeal, it may lack practicality. Also, due to the historical nature of the building, noise might be an issue.
Price: from 370 USD | Cancellation Policy: 2-day | District: Old city (Centro) | Swimming pool: yes
6# Most beautiful hotel in Cartagena De Indias: Casa Del Arzobispado

- Don’t forget to sample the highly recommended spa services and immerse yourself in the lush, enchanting garden.
❌ Why you might not like this hotel
- The charm of the ground-floor rooms may be slightly dimmed by less natural light and a hint of mustiness.
- Lack of proper soundproofing might occasionally expose you to street noise.
- Here’s a tip: request an upper-floor room for better light, ask for a courtyard-facing room if you’re noise-sensitive, and be patient with the shower’s hot water.
Price: from 450 USD/2 pers | Cancellation Policy: 14-day | Location: Old city (Centro) | Outdoor swimming pool: Yes, in the courtyard + SPA

❌ Why you might not like hotel
Hotel Capellan isn’t without its quirks, and you might find:
- Noise disruptions from the street and adjacent club. Packing earplugs might save the day (or night) for light sleepers.
- Occasional room maintenance issues such as faulty doors and suboptimal shower water pressure.
- Rooms on the ground floor might lack the natural light you prefer. Consider requesting upper-floor rooms

- Views are fantastic
- Service is a bit slow
My opinion: I love the extraordinary view from the modern facilities of the Hyatt Regency surrounded by water and its proximity to all sorts of amenities as well as the historic heart of Cartagena.

Best hotels in Cartagena: the Rosario islands
The Rosario Islands are heavenly retreats just one hour from Cartagena. Here are the best Cartagena hotels on the nearby islands.
9# Best Luxury hotel on Isla Barú: Las Islas
My opinion: I love Las Islas Hotel because it offers a haven of peace far from the hustle and bustle of Cartagena. It’s great for playing Robinson in a bungalow surrounded by lush vegetation by the sea, while enjoying top-quality facilities.
Get away from Cartagena’s walled city and enjoy the Caribbean views in a treetop or sea-level bungalow nestled on the edge of Parque Nacional Natural Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo. The eco-conscious accommodations of Las Islas feel like a secluded island with the amenities found in the heart of the city.
✔️ Why I Like This Cartagena Hotel
- Reserve a room on the private Isleta, where you can enjoy the white sand beaches as you kayak, snorkel, and relax in a hammock on your private deck.
- Choose from sea-level or treetop bungalows with private pool options, or go for an adventure on Las Islas’s Casa Navegante Cholón, a two-bedroom catamaran.
- The hotel includes a bioluminescent night tour and an Astro-tour as part of your stay, as well as booking assistance for additional excursions and activities.
- Relax with traditional spa treatments or rejuvenate in the tranquil meditation room and yoga classes surrounded by nature.
- There is only one main road in the area, and if it’s inaccessible, you can get stranded. For a shorter, more reliable trip, opt for a boat ride from Cartegena de Indias.
❌ Why you might not like this hotel
- Small beach area (you must go to Isleta to get to the best beach).
- Service is relatively slow (and the resort is enormous).
Price: from 460 USD/2 pers | Cancellation Policy: no | Location: South of Isla Barú | Outdoor pool: Yes | Room service: 24/24
10# Best Modern Beach Resort: Sofitel Baru Calablanca
My opinion: I like the Sofitel Baru Casablanca for the comfort and quality of its services in a secluded setting, ideal for enjoying a gorgeous private beach and many wellness activities.
In the heart of paradise, the Sofitel Barú Calablanca is the embodiment of seclusion, luxury, and immaculate service, providing an oasis of tranquility for discerning travelers.

This remote haven touts an array of impressive features:
- Exquisite amenities such as spacious rooms, new and well-maintained facilities, and complimentary luxury toiletries keep you in utmost comfort.
- The unparalleled service offered by the staff enhances your stay. Be it Jorge’s unforgettable cocktails, the dedicated spa staff, or the competent room cleaners, their top-tier professionalism is consistently noted.
- Offering the perfect combination of relaxation and activity, you’ll appreciate the serene beach and numerous swimming pools alongside the well-equipped gym and free kayak use at specific times.
❌ Why You Might Not Like This Hotel
This slice of paradise isn’t without its minor quirks:
- The hotel’s remote location might pose challenges for some, as it leads to an isolated experience and a rather tricky journey on a not-so-great road.
- The lack pricing guide can lead to confusion. A friendly heads-up – inquire directly about the costs to avoid any surprises.
- For families, the limited kids amenities and the lack of a small shop for basic necessities might be inconvenient.
- Finally, don’t expect a bustling nightlife or a multi-lingual staff; it’s more about unwinding in serenity here and perhaps brushing up on your Spanish.
Price: from 430 USD/2 pers | Cancellation Policy: 3 days | Location: North Isla Baru | Outdoor pool: Many | Room service: 24/24
